Set off from the shores of Stone Town on a scenic 30-minute boat ride to the breathtaking Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island, nestled in the turquoise waters of the Zanzibar Channel. Just 5.6 km northwest of Stone Town, this small island ā about 800 meters long and 230 meters wide ā is rich in history and natural beauty.
Originally built as a prison in 1893, the old structure still stands, now part of a privately owned hotel. Today, the island is best known for its remarkable giant tortoise sanctuary.
